Description
As Canadian troops prepare to roll out of Afghanistan next year, the federal government is rolling ahead with plans to purchase new wheels (or tracks) for the army. A little more than a year ago, Canada committed roughly $5 billion to renewing its fleet of land combat vehicles through a medley of programs, including plans to upgrade the army's war-torn fleet of LAV IIIs and purchase three new types of vehicles: a close combat vehicle (CCV) to work with the army's Leopard tanks on the battlefield, a tactical armoured patrol vehicle (TAPV) to fulfil a variety of roles at home and in future conflict zones, and force mobility enhancement (FME) vehicles to carry specialized engineering equipment such as ploughs and route-proving capabilities.
